John Obi Mikel has completed a short-term loan move to Middlesbrough, it has been announced.
The midfielder spent 11 years as a Chelsea player before eventually left two years ago to join Tianjin Teda in China.
Now 31, the Nigerian international has returned to England, joining Boro until the end of the season after completing a medical and agreeing personal terms.
Mikel was said to be keen to return to the UK, where his wife and children remained while he played in China. He is also thought to have attracted interest from Roma, Wolfsburg and Crystal Palace before eventually completing a move to the Championship side.
During his time at Chelsea, Mikel won nearly every trophy he could have possible won. He was a Premier League winner in 2010 and 2015, won three FA Cups and was part of the team that won the Champions League in 2012. He also won the League Cup in 2007 and the Europa League in 2013.
“I’m pleased to get him in. He is a man with a lot of experience and quality,” Boro boss Tony Pulis said.
“He has a winning mentality and he wants to be here be a part of what we are looking to achieve.”
